Introduction

Lord Vishnu is an important Hindu deity also known as the ‘Preserver of the Universe’. Apart from being a part of the Hindu Trinity, He is majorly worshipped by the Vaishnavas. Vishnu Sahasranama puja comprises of reciting the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. There is a deeper meaning attached to each of the 1000 names of Vishnu.

Importance and Significance of Vishnu Sahasranama Puja

Vishnu Sahasranama is a part of the great Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is one of the most powerful prayers of Lord Vishnu. It is known to bestow prominence, affluence, success, happiness, as well as wisdom. It takes away suffering and leads us to a path of salvation. Different Pujas are performed for different purposes. The main purpose of Vishnu Sahasranama chanting is believed to clear the mind and keep it calm. When you have a calm mind you are free from delusions and your mind does not cling to useless ideas. This leads to the process of self-realization.

History and Stories

According to a story in the Mahabharata, Bheesham Pitamaha was on the verge of death after being fatally wounded in the war. It was a difficult time for the Pandavas having lost so many resources in the war. Yudhistra, being the eldest son and the King of Hastinapur, goes to him to seek wisdom. Whatever questions were posed by Yudhistira, Bheeshma Pitmaha answered it in the form of Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram. Bheesham then explains the importance and significance of Vishnu's names and even teaches it to him. These questions posed and answers gained are found in the Anushasanika Parvam chapter of the Mahabharata.

Occasions to Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama Puja

There is no specific occasion as to when you can do this Puja. It can be done any time when one seeks peace in one’s life, or before a marriage to ask of a happy life or simply to gain the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Vishnu Sahasranama Puja Vidhi (Procedure)

Before performing the Vishnu Sahasranama Puja, devotees have to take a fast

  • The Puja commences by placing the deity on the asana
  • This is followed by reciting the Beej mantra
  • Panchamrit (honey, ghee, yoghurt, milk, sugar) is used to bathe the deity
  • Offerings are made while taking Lord Vishnu’s name. Every time you take the name of the Lord, you offer a Tulsi leaf.
